Really Wild Red kite - info

The Red Kite
A rehabilitated Red Kite was released at Gigrin, plus a visit from the 'Really Wild Show'...

Although released with the expectation that it would quickly mingle with the regular visitors to the feeding station the kite flew to the far end of the valley, missed feeding time, and didn't return to the feeding area until late afternoon having missed both the feed and the opportunity to mix with other kites

Then one day Tony (pictured on the left of Michaela Stracken of the "Really Wid Show") was able to follow the source of the transmission to a field close to the nearby town of Rhayader.

Here he found the kite cowering under a hedge with an interested buzzard eyeing it up!

She was traceable via radio as it had a small transmitter strapped to it's back and an arial wire extending beyond its tail. Over the next week it was possible to pick up the signal occasionally but never very near to the farm.

The kite was in very poor condition and appeared not to have eaten for several days. It was evidently still unable to fend for itself despite being so near to the feeding station.

The bird has since been returned to the rehabilitation centre, and another attempt at re-releasing the kite to the wild will be made at a later date. Michaela Stracken, here pictured in front of the 'Red kite centre' with "Bess", was on hand together with the 'Really Wild Show' team.

The 'Really Wild Show' filmed both the release of the kite, and the afternoon feeding, and the subsequent programme was shown on BBC1.

We have since been visited by a great many children who had persuaded their parents to take them to the 'kite farm'!

It's always very encouraging to see youngsters enthusiasm for what they have seen and for the interest they show in wildlife in general.
