In recent years there have been dramatic reductions in the Red Kite population in some parts of France, Germany and Spain.

The causes include illegal persecution and pesticides.
This shows the increasing importance of the growing UK population.

It was fortunate timing that young birds were available from Spain to launch the English releases in the Chilterns in 1989, it being very unlikely that any would have been available had a release programme been proposed to commence in 2007!

 Kites and Concerts
One of the outdoor summer events at Harewood was a Jools Holland concert. Kites, being inquisitive, were not going to be left out. Up to twelve were seen soaring above the stage, probably taking advantage of the heat from the lighting.
